Turkey time

In his argument to make the wild turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo) the national bird, Ben Franklin argued that the turkey is "a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America."  Although the wild turkey did not prevail over the bald eagle as our national bird, it was made Massachusetts official State Game Bird by Chapter 406 of the Acts of 1991.  For more information on all things wild turkey, including how to prepare your wild turkey for your holiday feast, take a look at the National Wild Turkey Foundation's website. If the NWTF inspires you to hunt for your dinner, remember to check out our Law About Hunting page.  But take care, according to 2013 Massachusetts Guide to Hunting, Freshwater Fishing and Trapping, the Fall turkey season ended on November 2nd.
