Is Cyberbullying Getting Worse?
Even though October is National Bullying Prevention Month, it appears that cyberbullying is getting worse. Recently, a young girl from Florida was tormented so much from online social media (mainly on facebook) that it brought about her demise. Fortunately, the Sheriff in that matter is not letting the bullies get away with it. Two of the bullies were arrested, aged 14 and 12. They are being charged with third degree felony aggravated stalking. Back in 2010, Massachusetts passed the anti-bullying law after the death of Phoebe Prince in South Hadley, Massachusetts. But unfortunately, as quoted from Kim Storey, a consultant with the Education Development Center in Waltham, “although we have an anti-bullying law there is no one making sure it’s actually happening and happening effectively”. With so much social media available to young people at their fingertips, cyberbullying is at a high rate. For intervention and prevention bullying resources, please check the the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education website, and for law-related resources, see the TCLL's law about page on bullying.
